　今日（1/17）放送分のNHKラジオ英会話から、具体例を紹介します。

 L.188 Dialogue 発言タイプ：感情⑦　無関心

Frankie: I like this library, Jeannie. It is very quiet and peaceful here.
Jeannie : Yes, I like sitting outside on these deck chairs.
Frankie: I have been reading some science-fiction books. They mention us.
Jeannie : Us?
Frankie: Yes, many of these books have androids in them.
Jeannie : Who cares? Besides, I don’t like the word “androids.” I want to be just like human.
Frankie: But the androids in these books act humans.
Jeannie : I don’t care. I don’t want to be called an “android” in the first place.

＜音の変化例＞
①　Yes, many of these books have androids in them.
　朗読を聴いていると、アンダーライン部は次のように音が変化していた。
　　android/s i/n (th)em　　「アンドロイド/ゼ/ナム」
　( )内は音声が消失した部分を表す。

②　I don’t want to be called an “android” in the first place.
　called an “android”　⇒　calle/d an/ “android”　「コール/ダン/アンドロイド」
　不定冠詞のanや接続詞のandは前に置かれた単語の語尾の子音と結合してしまうことがあるということ。

　アガサ・クリスティの小説『そして誰もいなくなった』から類似例をピックアップすると、
… with a view to carrying out some hush-hush experiments.　（page.2）
　with a view が　witha / view「ウィザ/ヴュー」
　with a flourish  witha / flourish「ウィザ/フローリッシュ」

　she had then been going to Italy to bask in the sun and be at one with Nature and the contadimi.
　she (ha)d then been going to Italy to baskin the sunan(d) be at one with Naturean(d) the contadimi.
　「バスキン」、「サナン」、「ネイチャラン」
*comtadimiというのはcontadino(=farmer)というイタリア語の複数形です。イタリアの農民ですから、山間地で家畜を放牧して生活している農民かもしれません。ブドウ栽培をしてワインを作っているような「農民」や米国のように広大な平地で脳号を営む農民ではないことは、文脈から判断できます。

　ラジオ英会話は分速120words、『そして誰もいなくなった』の朗読CDは分速173wordsです。とても早口です。音の変化のルールを知り、自分でも早口で朗読できるようにならないと、聞き分けられませんね。
　ラジオ英会話の方の朗読は、とっても長閑に聞こえてきます。
