最上級を修飾する副詞句及び副詞がいくつかある。by farが根室高校で使用している副教材のフォレスト"Feamwork English Grammar in 23 Lessons" P62に出ていた。FEG23Lには文例が一つだけ載っている。
He is by far the best actor in Japan.
（彼は日本で抜群にうまい俳優だ）
先週、生徒から質問があったのだが、一つだけでは寂しいから、最上級を修飾する他の修飾語の文例も追加しておいた。
3 much, by far, quite etc with superlatives
superlatives can be modified by much and by far, and by other adverves of degree such as quite (meaning 'absoloutely'), almost, practically, nearly and easily.
He's much the most imaginative of them all.
She's by far the oldest.
We're walking by far the slowest.
He's quite the most stupid man I've ever met.
I'm nealy the oldest in the firm.
This is easily the worst party I've been to this year.

absolutely:完全に(perfectly)、100％～だ、全く、確実に、決定的に、絶対的に、絶対に、間違いなく、もちろん、ものすごく、断然、無条件に、～そのものだ、（英辞郎より）
この中でもby farは2文例が挙げられている。頻度が高いのかもしれない。最後の文例のeasilyはどう訳すのだろうか？「これが今年あったパーティの中で手抜きの最たるものだ」くらいでどうだろう？適切な用例が英辞郎にもみつからない。見当外れの可能性もあるから、適訳を考え付いた人はコメントしてほしい。
「長文」と違って短文は前後関係や場面に関する情報がないので、むずかしいことがある。入試問題の短文は前後関係がイメージできないときはお手上げである。
この文例でeasilyと括弧でくくり、ブランクにしたら正解できる受験生は何％いるのだろう？この文例に出くわしたことのある生徒は正解できるが、そうでない生徒は見当がつかないだろう。
いやいや、前後関係がないから、muchでもquiteでもby farでも正解だろう。想定される場面が変わるだけのことだ。
ところでby farは実際の文章であまり記憶がないが、最近読んだThe Japan Timesの記事に用例が見つかった。3月20日付けの記事"DPJ caught on the horns of a fiscal dilenmma"にあるので、The Japan Times Onlineから該当部分のみ引用する。前の段落も引用しないとthe ratioの意味が不明となるから、段落二つ分を抜粋する。
The accumulated public debt is projected to exceed ¥862 trillion at the end of fiscal 2010, or about 180 percent of the country's gross domestic product.
The ratio is by far the worst among developed countries and many analysts have even started warning the government could default in the future.

「国内総生産に対する国債残高比率が先進国中最悪で、政府が将来債務不履行に陥りかねないと何人ものアナリストが警告し始めている」
一つ前の段落では、公的債務残高が862兆円となっているが、これは国債と借入金の合計額だろうか？政府保証債務が抜けている。国債及び借入金並びに政府保証債務現在高は財務省公表数字は2009年12月現在で917兆円である。
英文記事を理解することで、民主党政権になってから国債残高がさらに加速して増大している現状と、10年後の日本の財政破綻や経済状況を想像し、いま何をなすべきか考えてほしい。
