標記の記事が10月6日のジャパンタイムズに載っている。ロスエンジェルス・タイムズの転載記事だが、書いているのはワシントンポストの記者、デービッド・ファーレンソールドである。なぜ、ワシントンポスト記者の署名記事をLAタイムズが載せたのかは私にはさっぱりわからない。
高校生はアンダーライン部を訳してみて欲しい。制限時間は15分。
問題が硬すぎたのだろうか？デキのよい高校1年生と2年生の二人が制限時間で歯が立たなかった。
英字新聞記事の冒頭にはしばしばこういう文例が出てくる。高校の教材には使いにくいところだが、そこいらを解説してあげると後は理解できる。そのあたりは（教える側の）時事英語授業の醍醐味である。
特集記事の内容自体は高校生の知的興味をそそるものが多い。時事英語授業に真面目に2年間取り組めば、全国どこの大学院にも合格できるくらいの英語力が身につく。

Has climate change been around as long as the pyramids? It is an odd-sounding idea, because the problem is usually assumed to be a modern one, the product of a world created by the Industrial Revolution and powered by high-polluting fossile fuels.
But a professor emeritus at the University od Verginia has suggested that people began altering the climate thousands of years ago as primitive farmers burnes forests and build rice paddies from which methane bubbles. The practices produced enough greenhouse gases, he says, to warm the world by half a degree Celsius or more.
Othe scientist, houwever, have said the idea is deeply flawed and might be used to dampenmodern alarms over climate change.
Understanding the debate requires a tour through polar ice sheets, the farming habits of 5000-year-old Europeans and trapped air bubles more ancient than Rome.
記事全体は27段落で構成されている。そのうちの冒頭3段落を抜粋してある。冒頭部分は記者が力を入れて書くから、修辞がこっている文が多い。日本人にはやっかいだ。手がかりが後の段落の中にもある。
1000年単位でCO2やメタン濃度、土地利用率、地球人口がどのように変化したのか、過去12000年間の推移を表すグラフが載っている。説明文だけ紹介しておく。ここを読めばアンダーライン部が何を言っているのか具体的な状況がつかめた人がいるのではないだろうか（名誉のためにいうが、高校生二人にはノーヒントだった）。

グーグルで検索してもこの記事が見つからなかったので残念ながら割愛せざるをえなかった。センター試験問題にはグラブが載っている問題が出題されているので、グラフを読むことにも慣れていたほうがいい。グラフを読むことで、記事の内容がほとんどわかってしまう。内容のわかってしまった文は当然ながらやさしい。
