　#3316で3冊の本から引用しながら解説したが、中学生にはもっとあっさり片付けたほうがいいので、コメントを寄せてくれたHirosukeさんと後志のおじさんの意見を取り入れてシンプルにやっつけてみたい。

①They are holding the exhibition for four months.
　（その展示会は4ヶ月間開催している）

②I went on a diet for 3 weeks.
　（3週間ダイエットした）

③I'm staying with Bob DeWeese for a few days.
　（ボブのところに数日泊まっている）

④I have known you for a long time.
　（知り合ってずいぶん経つ）

⑤He hasn't had a proper night's sleep for a month.
　（1ヶ月間まともに夜寝ていない）


⑥They are going to hold a lot of events during the exhibition.
　（その展示会期間中は多くの催し物が開かれる予定だ）

⑦I went on a diet during  the summer.
　（夏にダイエットした）

⑧She heated the place during the winter with a huge wood furnace.
　（冬の間中大きな薪ストーブでその場所を暖めた）


　forは「何かがどれくらいの間続いているか」を表しており、forの後には数字を含む名詞句が来ることが多く、現在完了形で使われる頻度が高い。
  forの後には、second、minute、hour、day、week、month、yearなど時間の長さを表す（時間単位の）語が数詞と一緒に使われることが多い。
　たとえば、
   for a day
   for two days
   for three days
   for four days
   ...
　for a minute ⇔ for a long time

　duringは「ある期間に何かが繰り返し起きていることや、数回あるいは1回起きていること」を表し、duringのあとに「出来事」や「その出来事がいつ起こったのか」を表す名詞句を伴う。duringは現在完了形では使えない。
　duringの後にはthe exhibition、the rain storm、 the blizzard、 the typhoon、 a series of Kumamoto earthquakes のような出来事あるいは、ある出来事がいつ起きたのかを表す具体的な語、January、February、March、...、December、the spring、the summer、the fall（autunm）、the winterなどが続く。

　次の例のように for と during に同じ語が続く場合があるが、もちろんニュアンスが異なる。
  for the winter　：その冬の初めから終わりまでずーっとということ
  during the winter　：その冬の間にあることが1度、あるいは数回、あるいは毎日繰り返し起こること。

 高校生用文例中にあるが、大事な箇所なのでニュアンスの違いがわかるような和訳をつけておいた。

'Collins COBUILD English Grammar' の for と during の項の用例を追加しておきます。この本の文例は5億語のコーパス（コーパス言語学）からピックアップしたものであって、この本を作るために作文したものではありません。実際に流通している生きた文章です。
　1行ずつEXCELにコピペして、forとduringの部分を消して同じ大きさの（　　）にし、シャッフルしてテスト問題をつくってチャレンジしてみるもよし、和訳をしてみて、その和訳から英作文してみるもよし。遊びだから、各自工夫して楽しんだらいかが？
 

5-125  The preposition 'for' indicates how long something continuous to happen.

Is he still thinking of going away to Italy for a month.
The initial battle continued for an hour.
This precious happy time lasted for a month or two.
This machine was completely immobilized for ten minutes.
We were married for fifteen years.
I didn't speak for a long time.　　　
She would have liked to sit for a while and think.

You use 'the' instead of 'a' when the period of time is already known, with seasons, periods of the day, and 'weekend', or when you modify the time word with words like 'past', 'coming', 'following', 'next', 'last', or an ordinal(序数詞:　first, second, third, fourth,...). 

Tell Aunt Elizabeth you're off for the day.　　　　　
We've been living together for the past year.　
For the first month or two I was bullied constantly.
For the next few days he remained prone on his bed in his quarters.
Put them in cold storage for the winter.（冬の間中ずっと冷凍庫に入れておけ）
I said I'm off to Brighton for the weekend.

5-102  'During'can be used instead of 'in' with period of the day, months, seasons, years, decades, snd centuries.
 
We try to keep people informed by post during September.

She heated the place during the winter with a huge wood furnace.（大きな薪ストーブで冬の間中（毎日薪をくべて）、その場所を暖めた）
During 1973 an Anti-Imperialist Alliance was formed.
　（1973年（のある時）に反帝国主義同盟が結成された）
During the Sixties various levies were imposed.
　（1960年代に（繰り返し）さまざまな税金が課せられた）
During the seventh century incendiary weapons were invented.
　（17世紀（のある時に）焼夷弾が発明された）
They used to spend the whole Sunday at chapel but most of them behaved shockingly during the week.
　（チャペルで（毎週繰り返し）敬虔な日曜日を過ごすのだが、日曜日以外はほとんどの人がそうではなかった）

5-103  'During'can be used with most event nouns to indicate that one event takes place while another is occuring:

... trying to boost police morale during a heated battle with rioters.

　（ちょっとの間の、めったにない土砂降りの間に、雨蛙（アマガエル）は地面よりも高いところへ出てくる：穴の中にいると溺れてしまうから）
Some families live in the kitchen during power cut.
